X-ray Services in Lugano, Ticino

At Alpine Smiles, X-rays play a crucial role in modern dentistry, providing a safe, quick, and painless way to diagnose and prevent dental issues. Regular X-rays help detect dental problems early, avoiding discomfort and often reducing treatment costs in the long term. Our clinic utilises the latest digital X-ray technology, ensuring minimal radiation exposure while providing clear and precise images for thorough examination.

Why Are X-rays Important?

Dental X-rays allow us to see parts of your teeth and jawbone that are not visible during a routine examination. They are essential for identifying issues such as cavities, infections, impacted teeth, and bone loss, all of which can develop without visible symptoms. By capturing these images regularly, we can compare them over time, helping to catch problems early and monitor ongoing treatment progress.

Types of X-rays

Intraoral X-rays

• Bitewing X-rays: Used primarily for annual check-ups, these images capture the crowns of teeth, showing signs of decay between teeth and early bone loss.
• Periapical X-rays: These provide detailed images from the crown to the root, useful for detecting issues like abscesses, fractures, and bone loss around the tooth.

Extraoral X-rays

• Panoramic X-rays (OPG): These offer a full view of both the upper and lower jaws, sinus cavities, and temporomandibular joints. Ideal for evaluating wisdom teeth, planning orthodontic treatment, and implant placement.
• Cephalometric X-rays: Specifically designed for orthodontic treatment planning, cephalometric X-rays show a side view of the skull, illustrating the alignment and structure of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. These X-rays help determine the most effective orthodontic approach, particularly for cases involving facial and jaw structure adjustments.
• CBCT (3D X-ray): Cone Beam CT scans create a detailed 3D model of the jaw, critical for advanced cases like implant planning, bone assessment, and complex extractions.

Are X-rays Safe?

Our digital X-ray equipment is designed to emit extremely low radiation levels, equivalent to a few hours of natural background radiation. While the exposure is minimal, we prioritise safety by adhering to stringent radiological protocols and recommend X-rays only when necessary. Additionally, we employ protective measures for pregnant patients and use discretion with children, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
