Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth often need to be removed due to crowding or impaction. We perform safe and comfortable wisdom teeth extractions to prevent future complications.
At Alpine Smiles in Lugano, we specialise in all facets of wisdom tooth care, from routine check-ups to safe extractions when needed. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, emerge later than other teeth, typically between ages 17 and 25, and their placement at the back of each jaw can sometimes cause discomfort or alignment issues. Due to limited space in the jaw or their positioning, wisdom teeth may push against other teeth, become impacted (stuck in the jaw), or develop partially, leading to complications.

What is a Wisdom Tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to emerge in the dental arch and are positioned at the far back of the mouth. Their late eruption and placement mean they often cause issues, such as pressing on other teeth or leading to inflammation due to difficulty cleaning these areas. Wisdom teeth are not essential for chewing, so if they cause problems, extraction is often a beneficial solution.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Become a Problem?

Wisdom teeth may need removal if they cause pain, swelling, infection, or other issues that could affect the health of surrounding teeth. Even wisdom teeth that aren’t currently causing discomfort can create future challenges, such as:

• Crowding and Misalignment: When there’s not enough space in the mouth, wisdom teeth can push against other teeth, causing crowding and potentially affecting the alignment of your smile.
• Difficulty with Cleaning: Due to their placement, wisdom teeth are often harder to reach and clean properly, which can increase the risk of cavities and gum infections.
• Increased Risk of Gum Disease: Partially erupted or misaligned wisdom teeth can be prone to infections, as they are harder to clean and bacteria can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas.
• Tooth Decay: Because wisdom teeth are hard to clean, decay can quickly set in, leading to pain and infection.

When to Consider Wisdom Tooth Removal?

If you’re experiencing symptoms like discomfort, swelling, pain near the back of your mouth, or difficulty opening your jaw, it’s a good time to consult Alpine Smiles. Our dentists conduct a thorough evaluation using panoramic X-rays (OPG) to determine if wisdom teeth are currently causing, or are likely to cause, future issues. Sometimes, X-rays may reveal signs of pericoronitis—a common infection around partially erupted wisdom teeth—which can remain symptom-free but still warrants extraction.

Early removal is often recommended if there are signs that a wisdom tooth might lead to future complications. The younger you are when the extraction is done, the smoother and quicker your healing will be, as bone density increases with age, making extraction more challenging. In short, removing a wisdom tooth sooner rather than later not only eases the procedure but also makes for a more comfortable experience for you.

We generally recommend removing both the upper and lower wisdom teeth on the same side simultaneously. Since the area is already anaesthetised, this approach minimises future issues as the opposing wisdom tooth would otherwise have no function and could complicate cleaning. By addressing both teeth at once, you experience any potential discomfort in a single procedure, rather than undergoing two separate treatments on the same side.

Procedure for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Our clinic in Lugano offers pain-free, minimally invasive wisdom tooth removal procedures. Using advanced techniques, our dental professionals ensure a comfortable experience with effective local anaesthesia and individualised aftercare guidance. Surgical extraction may be necessary for impacted teeth, involving a precise incision and removal of any obstructing bone to access the tooth. This is done with utmost care to minimize discomfort and promote fast healing.

Post-Extraction Care for Wisdom Teeth
Proper aftercare following a wisdom tooth extraction is essential for preventing complications like dry socket or infection. Our team will guide you through your recovery, providing tips on diet, pain management, and how to maintain oral hygiene as the extraction site heals. Minor swelling or discomfort after removal is typical, and our dental professionals are here to help if you experience any concerns.

Alpine Smiles Emergency Dental Services

FAQ on Wisdom Teeth Removal

Why do some people need wisdom teeth removed?

Limited jaw space and changes in diet and oral health needs over time have made wisdom teeth less necessary. If they press against other teeth, cause discomfort, or are at risk for decay or infection, it’s generally advisable to remove them.

What are the symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth?

Common signs include soreness or tenderness near the gums or jawbone, unpleasant breath, or a bad taste when chewing near the area. More severe symptoms, like difficulty in fully opening the mouth or swollen lymph nodes, may also signal the need for attention.

Can impacted wisdom teeth damage other teeth?

Yes, impacted wisdom teeth can apply pressure on adjacent teeth, leading to discomfort, structural changes, or an increased risk of cavities and gum issues.

Tips After Wisdom Tooth Removal

1)
Unless you have a physically demanding job, you can go to work the next day.
2) Avoid exercise or strenuous activity for the first day to prevent bleeding.
3) Avoid touching the wound with your fingers or tongue.
4) Do not eat, drink, or rinse your mouth for the first 3 hours after the procedure to prevent bleeding and infection.
5) Keep your mouth clean to avoid infection in the wound. Your dentist will provide instructions on rinsing and brushing.
6) Avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours and refrain from smoking throughout the entire healing process.
7) You can eat normally, but many people prefer soups and soft foods in the days following.
8) Do not suck on things or drink through straws as this may cause a dry socket.
9) If the wound continues to bleed, you can bite on sterile gauze for 30 minutes at a time. Do not use cotton balls, as fibres can stick to the blood clot.
10) If you experience swelling, wrap an ice pack and hold it against your cheek for 15 minutes at a time.
11) You may find it slightly difficult to open your mouth or swallow for a few days. This typically resolves within a couple of days. Be patient, as the wound may remain tender for several days.
